Cricket is one of the many games in the club ball sphere that essentially involves hitting a ball with a hand-held instrument; others are baseball, golf, hockey, tennis, squash, badminton and table tennis. [2] In the case of cricket, an essential difference lies in the existence of a solid target structure, the wicket (originally, it is believed, a "wicket" through which the sheep have been parked), which the drummer must defend. [3] The cricket historian, Harry Altham, identified three "groups" of "club ball" games: the "hockey group", in which the ball is pushed between two targets (goals); the "golf group", in which the ball is pushed towards an undefended target (the hole); and the "cricket group", in which "the ball is aimed at a mark (the wicket) and is driven out of it" [4]. It is generally accepted that cricket is a children's game from the counties of south-east England, sometimes in medieval times [3]
